Liebherr Mining Equipment
I was able to convince a few members from work to begin our ASQ journey. We began with Certified Quality Technician.
The certificate to the right is from completing a 12 month management college level course provided by Crestcom.
The greatest learning experience I have had with Liebherr I don't have images of nor can I present, however the experience of managing hourly and salary employees is has been and continues to be an incredible experience. In addition I work for an excellent manager whom was a keynote speaker for ASQ. I have gained an invaluable amount of knowledge from my experiences at Liebherr and am very grateful for that.
Northrop Grumman
Portable Drill Project
Ford Class Aircraft Carrier main seawater reactor pump drilling
I designed this custom drill to produce the 16 holes to mount the four main seawater reactor cooling pumps in the USS Gerald R. Ford Aircraft Carrier. The drill was produced by AMEC and had special coatings and custom inserts.
The drill head was a prototype produced by Climax Portable Machine Tools and was unproven. The machine stroke was ~6.5" and the depth of hole needed was >9". The holes were 4-9/16" in diameter.
All the bases necessary were also custom designed between shop floor tool makers and myself.
The job was a huge success and the drill was subsequently used to install other major components of the carrier due to its lightweight, portable and flexible design.
Notebook to CAD
Nimitz Class carrier catapult trough drill rig
As a Tooling Engineer at the Northrop Grumman Shipyard, I was responsible for improving quality, consistency, and reducing labor hours by designing portable tooling intended to be used in dry dock or shipboard environments which are typically very harsh.
The first three images are from a notebook sketches I took while working with a crew to improve the overhaul efficiency and quality of several thousand bolt holes that hold the catapult launch system in place below the deck of Nimitz Class Aircraft Carriers.
I was able to take visualize the concept, sketch out what might work, and design the tool in CAD.
This is an elevation view of the drill rig shown riding on pre-existing rails inside the catapult trough.
NASA / MLAS Rocket
3D Spatial Alignement of a Rocket
This project made the front cover of Manufacturing Engineering Magazine!

**Click here to see a video of the rocket being produced and launched**
I was invited to the launch and attended, later meeting with in the control room and discussing the event and build with top NASA directors, including Ken Mattingly, (the guy who got the measles and didn't fly on Apollo 13!
That's me on the left talking to Ken Mattingly (Apollo 13 measles guy) and Mike Gilbert (NASA Director) about laser metrology. Photo from 2009.
This picture shows the rocket under construction. On the computer is the scanning data from a laser tracker. We were scanning the fins for position which was critical for flight path since this was not a guided rocket.
This memo is to inform me that Northrop Grumman awarded me $1000 for my contribution to NASA.
Three Mile Island Steam Generator Replacement
That's me in the middle in a very rare opportunity to have a picture taken inside the Three Mile Island reactor building. This particular image is of the main entrance door to the reactor containment building.
This was a 2.5 month 72 hour mandatory work week steam generator replacement mission. My role was to provide measurement analysis and support for extraction, rework, and installation of the steam generators. This was a very successful project and I'm still very good friends with the crew that I worked with. The guys and gals that work to keep these old reactors working are incredible.
Pennsylvania College of Technology
I was also instrumental in organizing and leading a team to compete in the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Mini Baja competition for two years. My efforts were applied to forming a team, keeping them motivated, presenting to University Management for official recognition and sponsorship as well as external sponsorship, and organizing all the travel to get an entire team of people and equipment into Canada to compete. I was also able to contribute to the actual manufacture of the vehicle, but I must give credit to the an incredible crew chief and car builder Lance Spotts who was primarily responsible for the design and production of the vehicles.
This was an incredible experience.

Sinclair Community College
I was a paid math tutor for the college.
I am Six Sigma Green Belt certified with project. This was a full semester college course and it was a requirement to have an employer qualify the project. This was a great course and was very rewarding.
